Symmetry and Asymmetry

  "Asymmetrical designs are generally more active than symmetrical ones, and designers achieve balance by placing contrast elements in counterpoint to each other, yielding compositions that allow the eye to wander while achieving an overall stability." (Lupton/Phillips)




  This picture was taken by me this afternoon. I've already said that I love to take pictures for the beautiful sky~ And after I took this picture, I realize that this is kind of symmetrical designs. The trees on both sides of the road form a symmetrical picture. (It also can be seen as the last chapter content, "Point, Line, Plane"😆) 






  But seeing this one. It has no symmetrical items. Actually I like this one most. The two street lamps, one car, and the red light on that car make this picture more active. And this composition is really good! I like the asymmetrical pictures. I think asymmetrical things are complex and beautiful. Just like the book said, asymmetrical things are more active than symmetrical ones. I totally agree with that. We can make any kinds of different asymmetrical things. But asymmetrical things are very simple that I cannot imagine for that.

    I really like the contrasting symmetry you have in your pictures, not just with the objects but within the horizon line as well. The viewer is almost forced to use the street lights as a point of reference when trying to understand this image.

    I like your analysis of balance and symmetry in your pictures of the sky, especially your point on asymmetrical things being more complex. You did a good job at showing the concepts of symmetry and asymmetry even though both pictures are of the sky; and presumably the same sky at more or less the same time, it really shows how these concepts can make things look so different.

    I think you did pretty good at illustrating the difference between symmetrical and asymmetrical compositions through photography. Also, I agree that asymmetrical balance creates a more aesthetic and captivating photo.

    Actually, I really love to study the fields of photography. And the main reason is that I want to know more about framing. Figure/Ground

“Building on memory and experience, the brain fills in gaps and filters out extraneous data.” (99) What I'm interested in this chapter is the figure inside of figure. When I saw the figure inside of figure first, I'm really surprising about that. I thought that was amazing.  In this picture, the question is "what did you see at first sight in this picture? A dancing woman with dress, two people are kissing, or nothing." Right, it is the test for psychology. I always love to do such tests. Actually, the reason why I like this kind of picture is that it is not only just a picture, but also it is a tool that can help psychologists to get more information from others. For example, just talk about this picture, answering the question I said in the first sentence. And here is the result. Pixel and Grid

  “Grids function throughout society.” (p. 187)    Pixel art is interesting. There is a game named "Minecraft" which is made by pixel art. In our lives, we can see a lot of things made by pixels. Like the QR code. And when our website was bad, the pictures that we upload are very vague.  http://xhslink.com/fOfxP  http://xhslink.com/Z4exP In this two picture, the pixel Pikachu and Snoopy were painted by hand. And it used the grid to finish a round thing. In my opinion, all living creatures are composed of round things. But we can clearly see the square grid and we also can see the images. That's so funny! Using eyes as an example! We can see the facial expression on Pikachu's face. The right eye was painted by using four little grids and it looks like a round eye. The left eye was painted by using two grids and it looks like a closed eye.
